A ZipGuide outdoor blind installation on a Malaysian landed home

Home/About

Designed in Malaysia. Not Just Manufactured Here.

There is a difference between making a product in Malaysia and designing one here. We do the second.

The difference

Making and designing
are not the same thing.

Most outdoor blinds sold in Malaysia are imported systems, adapted. The design decisions — how the fabric is held, how loads transfer into the wall, how the motor responds to wind — were made for somewhere else’s weather, by people who have never watched a storm come across the Klang Valley.

ZipGuide is developed from the system level. We examine how each component should work, how loads are carried, how fabric behaves at span, how the blind responds to wind, and how installation can be made faster and more repeatable on a real site.

That work happens here, by people who have installed these blinds through our storms and gone back to fix what did not hold. Our design process is driven by real installation conditions and the problems we meet in the field — not by a catalogue.

We are manufacturers, not assemblers. It is the reason we can change a part when the field tells us it is wrong.
The system

38 precision parts,
one complete system.

A ZipGuide is not a roller and a bit of fabric. It is thirty-eight parts that have to agree with each other: the headrail, the side rails, the bottom bar, the motor, the fabric, the brackets and every fixing between them.

Designing the whole system rather than sourcing the pieces means we control the tolerances where they matter — and that when something needs improving, we can actually improve it rather than waiting for a supplier to agree.

How it gets made

Concept to installation

  1. Concept. A problem from the field, or a limitation we have run into often enough to want gone.
  2. Design. System-level: how the loads travel, how the parts meet, how it will be installed by someone on a ladder in the heat.
  3. Prototype. Made here, so the loop between drawing and object is days rather than months.
  4. Test. Against wind, rain, heat and repetition — and against the way people actually use a blind, which is rarely the way the manual says.
  5. Improve. Most of the work. This is where the design earns its keep.
  6. Manufacture. In Malaysia, under our own quality control.
  7. Install. By installers who report back — which is how the next concept starts.
The company

Who we are

ZipGuide® is a brand of Smart Curtain Malaysia Sdn Bhd (202201036102 (1481799-X)), with showrooms in Selangor and Penang and installation nationwide.

Alongside ZipGuide we make motorised curtains, roller blinds, honeycomb blinds, wooden blinds and awnings — which is the reason the outdoor range exists at all. We kept being asked for something that would survive outside, and the imported options kept coming back for repair.

Our 29-unit installation on the 53rd floor of a Kuala Lumpur skybar was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records. The company has also received the Golden Bull, Nanyang Excellent Eagle, Sin Chew Product Excellence and Kwong Wah Yit Poh awards.

See one in action.

A blind is hard to judge from a photograph. Both showrooms have systems you can operate yourself.
